Health I (Same as Health 9)
Offered to grades: 10, 11, 12

This comprehensive course introduces students to a wide range of health subject areas. The areas of study include fitness and nutrition, diseases and disorders, adolescent growth and development, consumer and environmental concerns, and substance use and abuse. Within these areas, students will further explore stress management, teen suicide and human sexuality issues.

The student will:

  • Know essential concepts about the identification and prevention of diseases.
  • Analyze community resources that support mental/emotional, social, and physical health.
  • Understand key concepts of interpersonal relationships, communication, and advocacy.
  • Demonstrate goal-setting & decision-making skills.
  • Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity.
  • Practice preventative health behaviors.
  • Analyze the influence of family, peers, health professionals, culture, media, technology, and other health factors.
  • Access valid information, products, and services.
  • Recognizes the personal, social, and legal consequences of substance abuse.
  • Understand factors that influence sexual health.
  • CPR/First Aid Instruction – Fulfilling State of Iowa requirement

Health II
Offered to grades: 10, 11, 12
Length: 1 Term
Category: Elective
Prerequisite: Health I

This course is designed to introduce students to the concept of Public Health (the laws and regulations that promote and protect the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work, and play). Students will gain a better understanding of the role Public Health plays in their everyday lives by reviewing previous and current public health issues and strategies. Students will also explore an issue in Public Health that is most interesting to them and develop their own strategies to combat the problem.

The student will:

PE – Intro to Strength Training
Offered to grades: 10, 11, 12
Length: 1 Term

Prerequisite: None

The goal of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to learn proper strength training techniques and understand the appropriate progression of a fitness program. Students will work in the areas of muscular strength, endurance, and mobility.

Students will:

  • Increase muscular development, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance; develop proper techniques and alignment for safe, injury-free participation in all fitness activities
  • Understand health-related and skill-related fitness components and terminology
  • Understand the importance of maintaining proper body composition, weight control, and diet.
  • Develop and exhibit good sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork, emotional control, leadership, and a positive self-concept.
  • Demonstrate, recognition, and acceptance of one’s own strengths and limitations, as well as those of others.
  • Understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy and active life. 

Peer Assistance Learning (PAL)
Offered to grades: 11, 12
Length: 1 Term
Category: Required
Prerequisite: None

PAL PE is a physical education course designed for students who may benefit from a combination of differentiated instruction and peer assistance in the Physical Education setting. This course provides a fun and inclusive atmosphere in which all students will learn about and experience health, fitness, and recreational activities as well as social and interpersonal development. PAL PE also supports the development of leadership skills for all students and empowers all students to foster an inclusive environment school-wide. Students involved in the Best Buddies program will receive first priority in the scheduling process.

Students will:

  • Discuss the benefits of a physically active lifestyle as it relates to college or career productivity 
  • Evaluate risks and safety factors that might affect physical activity preferences throughout the life cycle
  • Employ effective self-management skills to analyze barriers and modify physical activity patterns appropriately, as needed
  • Exhibit proper etiquette, respect for others, and teamwork while engaging in physical activity and/or social dance 
  • Exhibit proper etiquette, respect for others, and teamwork while engaging in physical activity and/or social dance 
  • Accept others’ ideas, cultural diversity, and body types by engaging in cooperative and collaborative movement projects

PE – Advanced Strength Training
Offered to grades: 10, 11, 12
Length: 1 Term or 1 Semester (Skinny block)

The goal of this course is to provide students an opportunity to continue advancing their strength training knowledge, techniques and movements. Students will be exposed to the following Components of Fitness:  muscular strength, muscular endurance, and mobility. The skills learned in this course are meant to build upon previous knowledge and skills gained in the Intro to Strength Training course.

Students will:

  • Increase muscular strength development, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, speed and agility
  • Develop proper techniques and alignment for safe, injury-free participation in all fitness activities 
  • Understand health-related and skill-related fitness components and terminology
  • Identify the skeletal and muscular systems
  • Understand the concepts of strength training and speed development
  • Understand the importance of maintaining proper body composition, weight control, and diet
  • Understand the importance in today’s athlete the use of weight and speed training
  • Develop and exhibit good sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork, emotional control, leadership, and a positive self-concept
  • Demonstrate, recognition, and acceptance of one’s own strengths and limitations, as well as those of others
  • Understands that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction 
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy and active life

PE – Team Sports
Offered to grades: 10, 11, 12
Length: 1 Term or 1 Semester (Skinny block)

The goal of this course is to establish an understanding of a variety of team sports while promoting a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. This course exposes students to different pathways to participate in physical activity.  Skills, techniques, and fundamentals of each sport will be emphasized. All outdoor activities are weather-permitting. Possible course activities include volleyball, football, basketball, soccer, frisbee games, team handball, and floor hockey.

Students will:

  • Applies the terminology associated with exercise and participation in selected individual-performance activities, dance, net/wall games, target games, aquatics, and/or outdoor pursuits appropriately 
  • Uses movement concepts and principles (e.g. force, motion, rotation) to analyze and improve performance of self and/or others in a selected skill.
  • Uses strategies and tactics effectively during gameplay in net/wall and/or target games.
  • Applies strategies and tactics effectively during gameplay in net/wall and/or target games.

PE – Individual Sports
Offered to grades: 10, 11, 12
Length: 1 Term
Category: Required

The goal of this course is to establish an understanding of a variety of individual sports while promoting a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. This course exposes students to different pathways to participate in physical activity.  Skills, techniques, and fundamentals of each sport will be emphasized. All outdoor activities are weather-permitting. Possible course activities include: golf, tennis, archery, disc golf, badminton, pickleball, table tennis, and yard games.

Students will:

  • Apply the terminology associated with exercise and participation in selected individual-performance activities, dance, net/wall games, target games, aquatics, and/or outdoor pursuits appropriately 
  • Use movement concepts and principles (e.g. force, motion, rotation) to analyze and improve the performance of self and/or others in a selected skill.
  • Use strategies and tactics effectively during gameplay in net/wall and/or target games.
  • Apply strategies and tactics effectively during gameplay in net/wall and/or target games.

PE – Warrior/Wolf Fit
Offered to grades: 10, 11, 12
Length: 1 Term
Category: Required
Prerequisite: None

The goal of this course is to offer students a  fitness program involving a variety of aerobic activities to enhance their cardiovascular fitness. Students will gain the skills and knowledge needed to maintain fitness levels post-high school. Activities can include HIIT workouts, circuit training workouts, aerobics, kickboxing, and yoga. 

Students will:

  • Analyze the health benefits of a self-selected physical activity 
  • Discuss the benefits of a physically active lifestyle as it relates to college or career productivity
  • Apply the terminology associated with exercise and participation in selected individual performance activities or lifetime activities
  • Combine movement concepts with skills in small-sided practice tasks in-game environments, gymnastics, and dance with self-direction 

PE – Virtual
Offered to grades: 11, 12
Length: 1 Term
Category: Elective

There are no prerequisites, however, students may be placed in this course in order to meet graduation requirements, acceleration needs, and/or remediation needs. Students who sign up for this course must have a full academic schedule or plan to graduate early.

This is an online physical education class focusing on the individual needs of the student to prepare for lifelong wellness. This course will consist of three strands: 1) Physical Component; 2) Social/Experiential Component; 3) Academic Component. With teacher guidance, students will work to develop a personalized wellness program that fits their individual strengths, interests, and goals.
